Solar growth and the value of self-consumption

Battery storage: from capacity to purpose
The IEA reports that 108 GW of battery storage was added worldwide in 2025, a 40% increase on 2024. Its review describes battery storage as the fastest-growing power technology and highlights the prominent role of lithium iron phosphate chemistry in deployment.

Solar and storage in energy-intensive industry
In March 2025, Rio Tinto announced an agreement with Edify Energy involving solar generation and battery storage for its Gladstone operations. The announcement described 600 MWac of solar and 600 MW / 2,400 MWh of storage, with construction then planned to begin in late 2025 and completion targeted for 2028. Those dates describe the announcement’s plan, not a verified completion update.

Solar on the Moon: an engineering frontier
NASA’s September 2023 announcement described support for the development of vertical solar arrays for lunar use. The arrays were intended to deploy autonomously and support the energy needs of future surface activity.
