Reliable electricity is part of healthcare

The joint Energizing health report examines reliable electricity access in healthcare facilities, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. It addresses demand assessment, technical and economic choices, investment and the conditions needed to support electrification.

Energy underpins the everyday work of care: lighting, refrigeration, communication and equipment. Planning must distinguish essential clinical services from ordinary building consumption. Maintenance and operational responsibility are as important as the equipment installed.

NEC perspective: Healthcare energy discussions should begin with the facility’s qualified team and a critical-load schedule. Solar and storage may support a wider energy strategy where appropriate, while required backup systems and clinical safety arrangements remain part of the design.
