Solar on the Moon: an engineering frontier

NASA’s September 2023 announcement described support for the development of vertical solar arrays for lunar use. The arrays were intended to deploy autonomously and support the energy needs of future surface activity.

Lunar energy is a reminder that a solar panel is only one part of a power system. Illumination, terrain, dust, temperature, deployment, storage and the required load all shape the engineering problem. A terrestrial rooftop and a lunar installation cannot be treated as equivalent environments.
