EV charging is also a building-energy question

The IEA’s Global EV Outlook follows electric mobility, including vehicle adoption, battery demand and charging infrastructure. The 2026 edition provides a current reference for organisations considering the wider development of electric transport.

At a property, charging is not an isolated installation. It adds to the existing building load. The number of chargers, simultaneous use, parking duration and desired charging speed determine the demand that the electrical system must accommodate.

NEC perspective: Evaluate charging requirements alongside the site’s main electricity demand. Load management may be sufficient in some locations; solar or storage may be appropriate in others. The assessment should test the connection limit, tariff, charging timetable and the cost of any proposed upgrade.

An office car park, a residential development and a logistics depot have different patterns. Start with those patterns before selecting equipment. Product availability, technical integration and supply arrangements must be confirmed for the market and project. NEC’s role here concerns energy planning, rather than a claim to manufacture vehicles.
