Energy efficiency begins with the operating baseline

The IEA’s Energy Efficiency 2025 report examines efficiency developments across industry, buildings, appliances and transport. It connects energy performance with affordability, security and competitiveness.

For a business, the first improvement may be better information. Monthly bills show expenditure, but interval readings reveal when demand rises. Production changes, temperature, occupied hours and equipment schedules can all explain why two months differ.

NEC perspective: Establish a baseline before making a savings claim. State the period, operating assumptions and treatment of changes in production or tariffs. This allows both finance and engineering teams to understand whether an improvement comes from reduced consumption, shifted demand or a different price.

ESG reporting should use the same discipline. Electricity data, reporting boundaries and emission factors need to be identified. A dashboard can support evidence collection, but does not by itself provide independent assurance or an ESG certification. The useful outcome is a clearer connection between energy decisions and measured operations.
